Evacuations from Oleshky begin during local ceasefire
Residents of Russian-occupied Oleshky were evacuated by bus on 30 October as the local ceasefire held for a fourth day.
Both parties to the conflict are presented separately, followed by a factual neutral assessment.
Ukrainian account
Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets called the aid mission unique and said he hoped similar operations could help other isolated communities. People bound for Ukraine must first travel through Russian-held territory to Anapa, then fly to Belarus and continue overland into Ukraine; the exact number remained unclear.
Russian account
Russia's ombudswoman Yana Lantratova said some residents chose Russia and others Ukraine. Those remaining in Oleshky were to receive food and medical aid. The Kremlin called the cooperation an isolated case that could not currently be extrapolated to broader peace negotiations.
Neutral editorial assessment
AP and Reuters confirm that bus evacuations and the joint relief operation began. The number leaving was initially unclear, and the route for those returning to Ukraine passes through Russian-controlled territory and Belarus. The ceasefire is limited in area and time, while attacks continued elsewhere.
