War Compass is a static editorial website. Personal data is processed only where necessary to provide and secure the website technically or to respond to contact enquiries.

Server logs and hosting

When the website is accessed, the hosting provider may process technically required access data. This may include the IP address, date and time, requested file, amount of data transferred, referrer URL, browser, operating system and HTTP status. Processing serves delivery, stability and the detection and prevention of attacks.

Purposes and legal basis

Technically required access data is processed on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. The legitimate interest is the secure, stable and functional operation of the website. The hosting provider may be a recipient.

Retention

Server log data is retained only for as long as necessary for operation and security. The specific period depends on the hosting provider's technical settings and contractual requirements. Longer retention takes place only where needed to investigate a security incident or meet a legal obligation.

Cookies and Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-EMXLVQ1CM4), a service provided by Google Ireland Limited, only after your explicit consent for statistical audience measurement. Before consent, and if you reject it, no Analytics connection to Google is made and no Analytics cookie is set. After consent, page views, interactions, browser and device information, an approximate region and random identifiers in the first-party cookies _ga and _ga_<ID> may be processed; we do not send names or email addresses.

The legal basis is your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25(1) TDDDG. Analytics cookies and user-level and event-level data are limited to no more than two months; aggregated standard reports may remain longer. Processing may also take place in the United States on the basis of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and, where required, Standard Contractual Clauses. Local media

Images displayed on War Compass are loaded locally from this website's server. Merely visiting the page therefore does not connect to a third-party image, video or font service.

External sources and links

News reports contain links to external sources. The relevant provider's website is contacted only after such a link is clicked. That provider may then process the IP address and other technical data and is responsible for that processing.

Contact enquiries

If contact is made by email or telephone, voluntarily supplied data is processed to handle the enquiry. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for contractual or pre-contractual matters, otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Data is deleted once the enquiry is complete unless statutory retention duties apply.

Your rights

Subject to the statutory requirements, you have rights of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). Consent may be withdrawn at any time with future effect.
