More than 1,000 Ukrainian drones reported as energy attacks continue
Russia said it intercepted 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight into 18 October. St Petersburg reported one death, injuries and fires, while Ukraine reported renewed Russian attacks on civilians and energy sites.
Both parties to the conflict are presented separately, followed by a factual neutral assessment.
Ukrainian account
Ukraine did not confirm Russia's interception figure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had attacked Ukraine's energy, oil and gas sectors 76 times in one week. Kyiv describes its long-range strikes as a response to continuing Russian attacks.
Russian account
Russia's Defence Ministry said 1,015 Ukrainian drones were destroyed over 15 regions, occupied Crimea and the Black Sea. Russian officials reported one death, five injuries and fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchi oil depot.
Neutral editorial assessment
AP and Reuters corroborate the reciprocal escalation and document damage on both sides. The figures of 1,015 drones and 76 energy attacks each come from a party to the conflict and are not fully independently verified. An energy ceasefire announced by Donald Trump has been confirmed by neither Kyiv nor Moscow.
