Freighter hit in the Strait of Hormuz – attacker remains unknown
An unknown projectile hit a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran reports one dead and four injured off Qeshm; it is unclear whether both reports describe the same incident.
Both parties to the conflict are presented separately, followed by a factual neutral assessment.
U.S. account
The U.S. government initially did not attribute the attack to anyone. Asked about possible U.S. involvement, President Donald Trump declined to answer; CENTCOM initially issued no statement.
Iranian account
Iranian authorities said an Iranian freighter had been hit off Qeshm by an unnamed ‘terrorist enemy.’ According to the governor of Qeshm, one crew member was killed and four were injured.
Neutral editorial assessment
UKMTO confirms only that a vessel was hit by an unknown projectile; the attacker, vessel and casualty status at that time remained unknown. AP reports fire, evacuation and casualties citing Iranian authorities. It has not been independently established that both reports describe the same incident; attribution remains unresolved.
